In particular, the paper will review the theory that a special form of the rods was developed in ancient Japan. The special form is that of a counting-rod with grooves engraved on its sides to indicate numbers. This form was described as early as the 6th century in the Shushu Jiyi （数術記遺）. However, there is no evidence to confirm that these Japanese engraved rods were counting-rods, and they were not related to the Shushu Jiyi.
